Mark Bennett Exhibition
You are warmly invited to the private view of this exhibition in the Main Foyer Gallery of Bedford School. All of the paintings are quite detailed and always seek to capture a particular aspect of a natural light. The subjects of the paintings usually focus on landscape subjects found in England and more recently Germany. I recently took a sabbatical term and this was used to make several visits to Germany in search of the places associated with C. D. Friedrich. This lead on to a great deal of work and a show based upon the places he lived and painted a most humbling and enlightening experience and one which is still the source of new work. Whilst each painting has a clear idea and visual purpose, there is space enough for the viewer to explore and imagine. The paintings often allude to a sense of distance, drawing the eye of the viewer in to this painted world. “My landscapes are careful representations of specific places and the paintings seek to tap into the essence of each location, producing a distilled image, recreating far more than just a likeness: where the light not only illuminates the subject but also becomes the subject.” - Mark Bennett
