Steve Betts Exhibition

You are warmly invited to the private view of this exhibition in the Main Foyer Gallery of Bedford School. I have always been fascinated by the way in which surfaces and materials age. In recent paintings I have tried to look more intensely at buildings and walls from a varied range of locations, especially Italy. Thomas Jones’ tiny painting ‘A Wall in Naples’ was a profound influence. I concentrated initially on the texture of the stone, bricks and plaster but soon realised that the effects I was looking for could be more truly realised through colour. The boat paintings are based on studies made in Hastings, Malta and Tunisia. The pastel pieces are developed from the wonderfully evocative wooded hills above Soller in Mallorca. Prior to being a full time artist I was Head of a Secondary school Creative Arts Faculty in Hertfordshire. I completed an MA in Design at Loughborough University and a BA in Fine Art (Sculpture) at Newcastle where I was awarded a Hatton Scholarship. - Steve Betts
