Andris Nelsons conductor Nikolai Lugansky piano VERDI Overture, La forza del destino RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No. 4 WAGNER Prelude to Act I from Lohengrin SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 9 The second in the pair of Rachmaninov piano concertos performed this season by Lugansky is his Fourth. Completed in 1926 and less well-known than his previous two piano concertos, this work is infused with the jazz influences that Rachmaninov absorbed from contemporary composers such as Gershwin. Premièred less than 20 years later, Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was written in celebration of the Russian victory over Nazi Germany. Optimistic and playful, Shostakovich commented that "a transparent, pellucid, and bright mood predominates". Gala concert in support of Road Victims Trust.
