A £20 million redevelopment of the Castle Lane area linking the Cultural Quarter and the High Street started on site in March 2007.
After 40 years of under use, Castle Lane underwent a major transformation, symbolising the town’s aspirations for a bright new future. This truly exciting development of the Cultural Quarter, known as Castle Quay,which opened in March 2009 has create a new location for town centre living, accentuating the cultural and historical features of the town centre by showcasing the refurbished Museum, Art Gallery and Bedford Gallery alongside an open air archaeology park, “Castle Bailey Gardens”, and attracting independent, niché shops, cafes and restaurants.
